In August 1863, the 1st USCT encamped between Burgess Street and Poindexter Creek for about ten days. Slaves flocked to the encampment. The troops dug an entrenchment around the camp and tore down several buildings to procure framing for tents to house the escaped slaves. Former slaves were recruited here and at Coinjock in Currituck County to join USCT units forming in Norfolk.
