About 10:30 p.m. on
5 January 1863, Lt. Nathaniel Sanders and Joseph T. McCabe of the 1st
Union NC, Co. D, were fired on by 7-8 guerrillas hidden in the ruins of the
Nichols Hotel, site of the current Southern Hotel building. McCabe was killed
instantly. Sanders managed to get back to Union headquarters on |
