“Ambush of Sanders and McCabe”

About 10:30 p.m. on 5 January 1863, Lt. Nathaniel Sanders and Joseph T. McCabe of the 1st Union NC, Co. D, were fired on by 7-8 guerrillas hidden in the ruins of the Nichols Hotel, site of the current Southern Hotel building. McCabe was killed instantly. Sanders managed to get back to Union headquarters on Sheppard Street before dying from his wounds.

 

Sanders and McCabe were ambushed at the intersection to the left side of the photo.
