A shipyard with a marine railway stood at this location during the Civil War. The CSS Forrest was burned while sitting on the railway awaiting repairs to her displaced shaft to prevent her capture during the Battle of Elizabeth City. Her boiler was discovered about 50 yards from the shore and salvaged in late 1875 or early 1876.
