The Martin family lived in the house currently occupied by Twiford’s Funeral Home. Twiford’s bought the house from the Martin family. The porch was added in 1941.

Dr. Martin was the first doctor in Elizabeth City. His sons, Gen. James G. Martin and Col. William F. Martin, served as officers in the Confederate army. James G. Martin was Adjutant General for the state of North Carolina at the outbreak of the war. Gilbert Elliott (builder of the CSS Albemarle) was building a Chattahoochee-class wooden gunboat for Martin at Martin’s shipyard on Poindexter Creek prior to the battle of Elizabeth City. The ship was burned on the stocks to prevent her capture.
