Acting Master Frank M. Harris commanded
the CSS Black Warrior during the battle of Elizabeth City (10 Feb 1862). He was appointed acting midshipman on
July 20, 1861, and was promoted to acting master December 14,
1861. He served
in the North
Carolina Squadron aboard the C.S. steamers Ellis, Forrest, Sea Bird, and
Curlew. Following the sinking of the CSS Curlew in the battle of Roanoke Island (7-8 Feb 1862), the Curlew’s guns were
placed on the schooner M.C. Etheridge. She was commissioned the CSS Black
Warrior: Harris was appointed as her commander. Harris burned the CSS Black
Warrior to prevent her capture during the battle of Elizabeth City.
Harris later served aboard the CSS
Bienville and CSS Jackson in New Orleans during 1862. He was serving on the CSS Manassas when she was destroyed (24
Apr 1862).
Harris was captured when the CSS Louisiana was captured on April
28, 1862, and
sent to Fort Warren; he was exchanged August
5, 1862. Harris
was captured on the prize steamer Young Republic on May 6, 1864, and was released November
29, 1864, at Fort Lafayette in New York by order of the Secretary of the Navy.
