The first ship purchased by the North Carolina Navy in 1861, the Warren Winslow operated as a privateer prior to North Carolina seceding from the United States. Most of the crewmen of the CSS Beaufort were recruited in New Bern from the crews of the prizes captured by the Winslow. She sank in Ocracoke Inlet on 4 November 1861 after striking a submerged wreck; she was returning to port after successfully rescuing the crew of the French ship Prony.
