This company, made up largely of former members of G.G. Luke’s Independent Company, formed in Camden during April and May of 1862. Luke’s and Duke’s companies had mustered out early in April, leaving a large number of veterans available to form the new company. Captain Luke was appointed captain on 7 April 1862. The company continued to use the name “North Carolina Defenders.” It was mustered into state service at Camp Mangum in Raleigh on 28 July 1862.  Luke was elected Lt. Col. Of the regiment on 31 July 1862. Noah H. Hughes was promoted to Captain on 28 July 1862.
