Capt. G. Gratiott Luke’s Company
The N.C. Defenders were formed in Shiloh Township on May 25, 1861, shortly after North Carolina officially seceded from the Union. They enlisted on May 30, 1861, at Shiloh. Sent to Hatteras Inlet on August 23, 1861, aboard the steamer Stag, fifty of these men were subsequently captured when Fort Hatteras was surrendered on August 29, 1861. They were sent first to Fort Columbus in New York Harbor and then to Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. Of the men not captured at Hatteras, most were detached to serve in Co. E of the 17^th NC Regiment. While the bulk of the company was still incarcerated up north, the company was transferred to the newly formed 32^nd NC Regiment pending their release. They were designated Co. H. The captives were paroled in December of 1861 and January of 1862, and the enlisted men were officially exchanged on February 20^th, 1862. The company was officially mustered out of service on April 2, 1862. A number of these men joined the 56^th NC Regiment, which was forming at that time.	Capt. G.G. Luke
