The 1st and 2nd United States Colored Cavalry enlisted 12 men from Camden County from December 1863 – February 1863. They enlisted in Norfolk and Portsmouth. Their enlistment coincides with Wild’s Expedition through the northeastern counties of North Carolina, including Camden County. Slaves freed by Wild’s columns were sent to either Roanoke Island or the Norfolk and Portsmouth areas of Virginia. Able-bodied men were recruited for USCT service from among these former slaves.
