Over 150 men from Camden fought for the Union during the Civil War. Black men began joining the Union navy shortly after the battle of Elizabeth City in February of 1862. A white Union company, Co. D of the 1st Union NC, formed in the Old Trap area in the summer of 1862. Beginning in 1863, many black men joined USCT units.
