Former slaves began joining the Union Navy within days of the fall of Elizabeth City to Union naval forces in February of 1862. As much as 25% of the Union Navy was composed of black men during the Civil War. Many joined the crews of the Union flotilla operating in local waters. Others joined crews in the Hampton Roads area. At least 26 men from Camden County served in the Union Navy during the Civil War.
