Black men from Camden County began joining the 1st North Carolina Colored Infantry (35th USCI) in May of 1863. They began joining the 2nd NC Colored Troops beginning in June of 1863. Most of the men recruited during Wild’s Expedition ended up in the 38th USCT. Recruits from the Freedman’s Colony on Roanoke Island generally ended up in the 37th USCT. By the end of the war, over 100 black Camden natives had joined the Union army.
