Part of the original North Carolina Navy, the CSS Ellis was sold to the Confederate government in 1861. She was captured by a boarding party from the USS Ceres in the battle of Elizabeth City. After her capture, she was commissioned the USS Ellis in the Union Navy. She was destroyed on 24 November 1862 near New River Inlet by Lt. William B. Cushing to prevent her recapture. |
