Originally commissioned as the CSS Weldon N. Edwards in 1861, the CSS Forrest was renamed prior to the battle of Roanoke Island to honor French Forrest, Commandant of the Gosport Navy Yard. She displaced her propeller shaft in the battle of Roanoke Island and was towed to Elizabeth City for repairs. She was burned on the ways of the shipyard to prevent her capture during the battle of Elizabeth City on 10 February 1862. |
