The Dead End
Where are the soldiers who died on Roanoke Island?
This is the only known soldier's grave on Roanoke Island. Thomas Fitzpatrick of the 3rd Georgia died of disease on October 19th, 1861. He was buried in a family plot located within the grounds of the Dare County Airport here on Roanoke Island. I believe that the airport is built over the remains of Camp Georgia.
Confederates died of disease, and in battle. Union troops were killed in the battle, and some, surely died of disease during the occupation of the island. So where are they? A search of the online directory of the National Cemetery in New Bern finds no soldiers who died on Roanoke Island buried there. Some soldiers were removed by family members and re interred, but what about the rest? Any suggestions?
