Intro

NC Squadron sailors

The NC Squadron came into existance as the North Carolina Navy in 1861. By July of 1861, the State of North Carolina agreed to sell their ships to the Confederate government and they were absorbed by the CS Navy. By the time most of the fleet was demolished at the battles of Roanoke Island and Elizabeth City in February of 1862, over 300 men had served in the squadron's ranks, most of them local sailors, fishermen, and farmers.
